Race Report: Woodland Riders RD 2 2014

26 February 2014  |

The guys at Woodland Riders managed to put on another stonking event this weekend. Check out our race report and photo gallery here.

Despite the threat of yet more torrential rain in the South West, a reord number of riders turned out at the second round of the Woodland Riders Winter Series. Thankfully the weather held off and all the riders were able to enjoy a track that rode consistently all day.

The track in question was Avalanche. However the trail fairies had been busy, rebuilding the entire bottom section to ensure the track would be an unfamiliar challenge to locals and those from further afield.

The top section was relatively flat, requiring a lot of pedalling keep the speed up. A quick drop over the first fireroad led to Avalanche’s famous rhythm section, 4 jumps and two big berms gave riders plenty of opportunities to style it out for the photographers, or keep it low for the speed.

The section that caused the most difficulties came directly after the second fireroad crossing. An off-camber and rooty run-in to a steep drop was quickly followed with a sharp catch berm combined with an uphill exit, creating a section that tested most riders, with only the very best being able to hold their speed consistently. It was this section that attracted the brigades of hecklers in the afternoon, meaning the pressure was even greater when it came to race runs.

The large field of riders made for a great atmosphere, with spectators lining the entire length of the course and it was great to see everyone from the youngest Ripper to the oldest Veteran get stuck into a challenging, yet fun race track.

The race was won by Jay Williamson with a 1:14.015, with local legends Will Evans and Kye Fote following close behind with 1:14.801 and 1:14.876 respectively. The women’s race was taken by Haby-Blu Cann, who finished in 1:36.322.
